Europe > Spain > Grenada > GuadixLocated in Guadix in the Granada Altiplano, the origin of these caves as dwellings goes back to the 16th century, when then they were the largest cave settlement in Europe. This is what has given the town its special appeal: reddish clay mountains with white façades and whitewashed chimneys.
Pedro Antonio De Alarcón Caves, with a 2-key category rating, is in the charming village of Guadix. We opened in 1994 and totally refurbished in 2004, as a charming tourist complex in an exceptional location, 59 km from Granada, 110 km from Almeria, 200 km from Murcia and very near several interesting historical sightseeing destinations: the Alhambra, Sierra Nevada mountains (Puerto de la Ragua mountain pass), the Tabernas desert, the Guadix racetrack, the Calahorra castle, the Piñar caves and the coast.
Right on the Granada Altiplano, the origin of these caves as dwellings goes back to the 16th century, when even then they were the largest cave settlement in Europe. This is what has given the town its special appeal: reddish clay mountains with white façades and whitewashed chimneys. The most characteristic feature of these caves is their temperature, which varies between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius all year round, making them very cosy in winter and cool in summer. Since its opening, this is the only place in Spain where you can sleep in a cave. The caves are decorated in a traditional style, but with all the modern creature comforts. An example is the cave with a jacuzzi, for two people wishing to celebrate a special occasion. Information is available in reception on all the sporting and leisure activities and sightseeing trips available in the province.
